Before we look further into pH meters, we need to know what pH is! It indicates whether a liquid is acidic, basic or neutral. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. As such, a pH of 0 would indicate that the liquid is very acidic and potentially harmful. A pH of 14 is very basic, and that can also be dangerous, in some cases. A pH of 7 is neutral, neither acidic nor basic. Most of the liquids we encounter in everyday life lie between those two ends of the scale. Acidic solutions include lemon juice (which has a pH around 2 and is quite sour!) Soap, on the other hand, is basic and has a pH of roughly 9, and so is slippery to the touch.
