flame photometer instrument

One of these instruments is called a flame photometer, and it can help scientists identify which elements are present in a sample. It enhances their understanding of the composition of varying materials. It does this by burning a small amount of the substance in a flame and measuring how much light it emits. How bright the light is very relevant because it lets scientists know how much of each element is located in the sample. Flame photometers are often located in science labs, particularly those focusing on chemistry and biology.

For the use of flame photometer scientists first take a small quantity of the sample which is in question. They then combine the sample with a liquid known as a solvent that helps dissolve the sample. After the mixing, they place this mixture to the flame of photometer. The spark ignites the sample, and the flame emits light. The photometer then measures the brightness of that light and compares it against a special stack of charts. By comparing against a reference, scientists can work out what percentage of each of them is in the sample they analyzed.

Determining Elemental Composition with a Flame Photometer

The science behind the flame photometer is actually quite easy to grasp. Upon burning the sample, the heat from the flame excites small particles in the atoms of the sample known as electrons. Which means they experience a jump in power. As the electrons relax back to a lower energy level, they emit this energy as light. The released light is of a particular wavelength, known as the color, that corresponds to the difference between the energy levels of the electrons.

A photometer determines how bright the light is emitted from the sample. The brightness matters because it is indicative of the number of light particles — called photons — emitted. The more photons are released, the brighter the light will be. This relationship between the brightness of the light and the number of photons allows scientists to infer the concentration of the elements present in the sample.
